More Info:
Whitehorse campground is a public camp shared with non-horse users. This is a Forest Service approved TRIAL HORSE CAMP. (If all goes well, hopefully a permanent one!)
Horse Campers... Please note you must clean up your campsite of all manure and take it home with you...please. Leave No Trace (hopefully next year we will have a manure bunker in place for a more permanent horse camp.)
Hose camping became available as of September 8, 2015. And will unfortunately close the end of September for the winter season. This is TRIAL period of a few weeks has been approved by the Forest Service for Horse Camping access.
The weather has been very pleasant. At 5300 ft elevation and up... Good place to beat the valley heat. The trails are clear and very well marked. Maps are available from the camp host or online at Plumas Country forest service.
Pacific Crest Trail is east of Whitehorse campground approximately 2 miles. Via Bucks Creek Loop trail that goes thru Whitehorse camp. Riding west 1/2 mile is the Bucks Lake/Mill Creek riding and hiking trail.
Directions:
From Oroville CA take hwy 162 east to Bucks Lake. Turn off on Bucks Lake Rd at the fire station, pass the 3 Lodges, traveling approximately 3 miles to Whitehorse campground.
From Quincy CA there are 2 routes:
#1 Bucks Lake Road which is shorter but steep grade, approximatley 16 miles from Bucks Lake
#2 From Quincy take Bucks Lake Rd to Big Creek Rd Turning left on Big Creek Rd. This road is about 4 miles longer but easier access with truck/trailer. From Big Creek Rd turn right at fire station traveling on Bucks Lake Rd back toward Quincy, approx. 3 miles to campground
