Black Rock Equestrian sites are for campers with horses only; there are no horse corrals; sites have shared hitching posts, fire pits and picnic tables. Restrooms are available in the adjacent family campground.
Dogs are not permitted on the trails and may not be left unattended in the campground.
Camping and Backcountry Use:
The Spring is best, the desert comes alive with flowers and all the beautiful Joshua trees in bloom--and it is still cool out--Too hot in the summer to ride here. PLUS--YOU MUST BRING WATER--THERE IS NONE AVAILABLE FOR YOU OR YOUR HORSE. Also, pellet feed only, NO HAY ALLOWED. A nice weekend ride to experience the natural desert. Also limited people facilities, so self-contained rigs work best.--the beauty is worth the ride.
Trails are sandy wash beds to gentle rocky hill trails.
Ryan and Black Rock campgrounds have designated areas for horses. A $15 per-night fee is charged at Black Rock. Reservations for Black Rock horse camp may be made by calling 1-877-444-6777. A $10 per-night fee is charged at Ryan; water is not available. Call 760-367-5545, MonFri, 8 am to 4 pm, to make reservations for camping at Ryan. Reservations are not required for day use.
To access the Black Rock Canyon area, riders may enter at the Hi-View Nature Trail, Machris Wash, Long Canyon, and Little Long Canyon.
